An Official Statement From NSA
Like you, we have been deeply disturbed and saddened by the senseless and horrific deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others who have suffered from acts of violence, injustices, and racism across the United States. This turmoil we are witnessing grows out of a long and deep history in our country due to an inability to have open and honest dialogue, and oftentimes an unwillingness to drive real change. It also highlights that we must continue to listen and learn from each other’s different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences because we are made stronger when we leverage our differences to work together towards common goals.
One of NSA’s core values is Inclusion and we realize that we must do more to speak up and stand up for racial justice, equity, and inclusion. We understand that staying quiet on these issues sends a message of complicity and this is not our position. We believe that our organization of speakers, many of whom have platforms that are highly visible nationally and globally, can bring about real change that will uplift humanity and be a voice to support the voiceless. Our members share powerful, life changing messages, offer solutions to complex problems, and leave audiences inspired and transformed. And as the nation struggles to come together, to heal, and to eradicate hate, violence, racism, and discrimination, we hope that you will all continue to lift your voices and your influence to making our organization and our world a more welcoming, equitable, and inclusive place for all.
Over the past few weeks, many of us, including our staff and board members, have participated in listening sessions to learn more about the painful experiences associated with racism and inequities. We have received very positive responses to this effort and we encourage this dialogue to continue. As requested, we have also compiled a list of articles, podcasts, activists, texts, and more to help us hold productive conversations and continue our learning. We appreciate you making the commitment to invest in your development in this area.
Additionally, we have formed a task force on Equity and Inclusion which will help us to develop strategies and more effective practices for building a more equitable and inclusive association.
Thank you for all that you do to make our association world-class.
